CompEx launches new functional safety course

Certification body, Compex has developed a new Functional Safety Foundation course, designed to introduce participants to the concept of functional safety and its relationship to the safe operation of equipment and control systems.

Completed through either the online or face-to-face teaching options, the course is suitable for anyone wanting to gain a basic understanding of functional safety, ranging from employers working within high hazard facilities through to those who work within manufacturing facilities that have low hazard processes.

Based on IEC 61511, over the course of approximately two days, learners will gain a grounding knowledge of the concepts, standards, and practical examples of how functional safety requirements can be implemented. Key learning objectives include lifecycle considerations within the design process, requirements during operation and maintenance of the Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs), and proof testing fundamentals. Candidates are assessed by a 45-minute MCQ exam and, upon successful completion of the course, will be awarded a CompEx FS Foundation Certificate.

Huw Bement, director at CompEx, said: “Although CompEx offers qualifications to support a wide range of sectors and job roles, there remains the question as to how well the basics of functional safety are applied to workplace environments. We recognise, too, the way in which the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic may have made things difficult for some practitioners hoping to gain competency training within their specific industries. The Functional Safety Foundation course is intended to provide users with a comprehensive introduction to functional safety in order to ensure that efficient, safe conduct and practices are upheld within industries that have hazardous processes.

“The Foundation Certificate is one of our most popular, so we hope that this news will be well-received and encourage more employers to take advantage of this instructive course. The Functional Safety course is intended to cover a lot of ground and will give its participants a good understanding of how to apply this training to practical scenarios. We hope that the adaptable delivery of the course will make the training not only accessible to as wide a group of people as possible, but will offer those practitioners some flexibility when it comes to how they learn.”
